Zurich, Switzerland

For many travelers, Zurich is a layover destination. It doesn’t feature very high on people’s bucket list; Paris? Yes. Rome? Yes. London? Absolutely. But Zurich? The center of Switzerland is largely ignored by people traveling to Europe. Being the financial capital of Switzerland, Zurich is a very international city with students and people working here from all over the world. Set on a beautiful lake and near the Alps, Zurich is an old city which has its own charm.

The best way to get around is to walk and use the excellent public transport system. Starting our stroll through the old town of Zurich, from the street of Niederdorfstrasse which runs zig zag parallel to the lake, it is lined with small shops and many restaurants. This narrow cobblestone street leads to the lake where you could take a boat cruise of the city. This is worth it as it shows you the city from a different angle. Zurich has many old churches, but most of them were stripped of their idols and decorations in the Protestant reformation, who were also responsible for white-washing the colourful walls.

One of the best places to visit if Bahnhofstrasse, which is the main shopping street of Zurich. Here, you will find stores like Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Diesel, Cartier, Chanel etc. This street is one of Zurich’s most popular spots, located right in the middle of Old town. A recommended place to go to is Laderach, which is a specialty dessert and chocolate shop. They offer the finest chocolates and desserts one can imagine. It is one of the finest manufacturers of chocolate in a country which is known world over for its chocolate.

Zurich may seem boring to some, but it is a must-go destination for anyone who likes shopping, fine cuisine and chocolates.
